“I could never in a hundred summers get tired of this.”
Susan Branch
Hello Friends,
As summer is coming to an end and our college students are heading back to school, we’re thankful for the extended time we have been able to spend with our families over the past year and a half. We’re grateful for the simple joy of being together as a family and nesting in the sanctuary of our homes. We have continued to bask in the glory of all things New England within the comfort of our homes and village. However, we have also been reflecting upon how much we miss sharing our livelihood of New England living during this skewed season of life. As we look around our own homes and gardens and the inspiration they provide, our creative energy is running rampant. We are once again excited to share our passion for all things New England!
Welcome back to New England Home and Garden and our Family Life Through the Seasons.

Out & About…
A Ferry Ride and Gingerbread Cottages
We recently had family from the West Coast visit who had never been to Cape Cod and the Islands. Spending a day on Martha’s Vineyard is a breeze when you live on the shores of Massachusetts. It was a perfect day of beautiful summer weather, fun shops, walking the quaint villages of Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, and enjoying a delicious bowl of clam chowder at The Seafood Shanty.
Getting to Martha’s Vineyard is a short 45 minute ferry ride from Woods Hole. The ferries run frequently and arrive and depart in Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven. Oak Bluffs is known for its 300+ brightly painted, gingerbread houses. It is also home to The Flying Horses Carousel, the oldest operating platform carousel in America. Riders reach for rings as they go around. The rider lucky enough to grab the brass ring gets a free ride!
Enjoy a leisurely walk up and down the colorfully adorned streets of Oak Bluffs, then hop a shuttle to Edgartown and browse through the quaint shops adorned with beautiful window boxes. Grab a lobster roll and ice cream before heading to Vineyard Haven to catch the ferry back to the Cape. Although summer is coming to an end, it’s not too late in the season for a day trip to the Cape or the Islands. Fall on the Vineyard is a wonderful way to spend a day in New England!

Hosting a Lobster & Seafood Boil
Hang on to the last days of summer by having a traditional seafood boil. Serve lobster, crab or shrimp with all the yummy fixings….boiled potatoes, smoked sausage, corn-on-the-cob and plenty of melted butter to dip it all in! Serve a salad with fresh vegetables from your garden or local farm and a Maine blueberry pie for dessert. Grab some seafood boil party essentials below, and it’s a hands-on dining experience sure to please your family.
