Fall is beloved in New England, for good reason. As days shorten, we draw family close, curl up next to the hearth, and prepare to slow down just a little. To help you get into the fall spirit, we’ve pulled together lots of ideas for creating interiors that will turn your home into a refuge of warmth and coziness.
Begin Underfoot
Begin cozying up your interiors by adding warm touches. I roll up my rugs every spring and store them because we like the look and feel of cool, bare floors during the hot months. Each September, we bring them back and love the instant warmth they create.
Layering rugs is a great way to warm up any space. Place area rugs over wall-to-wall carpeting, or layer a smaller accent rug on top of a larger rug.
For maximum cozy, think tribal rugs in any combination of deep, rich colors.
Sea grass, sisal, and other plant fiber rugs come in a variety of neutral tones, and warm up any interior scheme.
Add Soft Layers
Plush and inviting throws and pillows add instant cozy to fall living spaces. Autumn is the time to layer blankets on your sofa or favorite reading chair so they’re within easy reach. Place them over the back of a chair, or fold them at the bottom of a chaise or ottoman.
Invest in a few cushy pillows that add softness and rich fall color to your interiors.
Keep additional blankets within reach. Folded up or rolled up in a basket, they make a decorating statement on their own.
Texture = Cozy
Cozy interiors have lots of visual and tactile texture from combining different materials and patterns in your home.
Think wood, wicker, tile, nubby fabrics, even plants add texture to your fall interiors.
The pouf above has a crazy amount of texture, which makes it super inviting! Poufs are a great accessory. They’re affordable, come in a variety of styles, and are easy to move about for additional seating during fall gatherings.
Not surprisingly, plants set a homey tone, and add texture and beauty to any space. If you have the room, go large so they lift the eye above furniture level. You can even bring fall flowering perennials indoors for short periods of time, like the asters above.
Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize
Fall isn’t the time to be a minimalist with your decor. Leave that for the hot months, where just looking at upholstery makes you sweat. If you prefer a modern look, the addition of a few candles or books will set a fall tone.
Candlelight warms up any space, adding instant cozy to your home. If you have kids and pets, use clear hurricanes or pierced lanterns to keep everyone safe. We light candles virtually every autumn evening to enjoy their scent and glow.
Lavish attention on your mantle. It’s the focal point of your room and one of the most fun and rewarding areas to decorate. Faux pumpkins are readily available at craft stores in a range of colors, and they’re easy to work into your fall decor.
A home just isn’t cozy without books. They’re one of life’s essentials, and they make fantastic decor, instantly warming up any space. You can use books to decorate in a variety of ways.
Stack them on a hearth or bench, arrange favorites on your coffee table for easy access, or place them on bookcases.
Break up the look of your bookcases with art, photos, lamps, or decorative objects. A slightly mussed look is definitely cozy.
Think Warm Thoughts
Last October we did a series of snippets titled Fall Pleasures. You might take a look at the many ways we bring touches of fall into our homes. There’s sure to be ideas you can borrow.
When you enter a cozy room, you instantly feel good. It’s worth the effort to create this feeling in your own home. Snuggle into your favorite chair with a cup of something warm and fragrant, layer on the blankets, and relish the coming fall season!
