Beach season is coming, and at our house that means decorating with seashells and agates. Each year we bring out baskets and jars of our favorites and place them where they remind of us summers past. Take a look at some of the treasures we’ve gathered from our favorite beach vacations over the years.
The agates above came from the Oregon Coast, gathered over many years, and polished in a rock tumbler. The small machine is quite affordable, and the process takes about two weeks. The results feel like nature created jewels for us to enjoy.
Agates don’t look very special as you gather them on the beach. A practiced eye helps you determine which rocks are agates-in-the-rough, and which are ordinary rocks. They come in a surprising variety of colors, from amber to milky white. We have bowls and baskets of them scattered all over our New England home to remind us of our roots in Oregon.
We plucked many of these shells off the beaches of New England. The rare whole sand dollars remind us of a special beach holiday on Cape Cod.
Confession: One of these shells hails from an exotic Mexican beach. Easy to spot, right?
One of our favorite seaside boutiques in Newburyport, Massachusetts has sadly gone out of business, but we were able to snag this plaque before it closed. I placed it in our family room where it reminds us to be light-hearted. And look at those colors! (We think Q is pretty spectacular too.)
