What is September to you? Is it school busses, the hint of turning leaves, the harvest moon hanging low in the sky? As the year rolls along, and the soaring temperatures of summer give way to a gentler season, nature reminds us of its reassuring normalcy. Despite the challenges we’ve all faced, we look forward to the delights of the mellow season, when we turn inward, take comfort in our homes, and enjoy the last of the season’s bounty. Nature never fails us, and fall is one of her greatest gifts. We hope you’re inspired to make the most of this very special time of year.
We’ve been delighted to work with our intern, Lydia Brown, as this month she shares more of her photographic and design talents with us. As a college student living in the Beacon Hill district, we consider her an expert on city life, and we love seeing Boston and the nearby village of Scituate through her eyes. She also lent her talents to our In the Home feature, decorating the spaces to celebrate early fall. Enjoy!

September signals a change in routine as our homes become the center of attention once again. We look forward to firelit evenings and the warmth of woolen blankets, and drawing family and friends near. The fireplace mantel below sets an early autumn tone with sunflowers, books, and candles. A golden wheat sheaf echoes harvest traditions. Light candles, pull out your favorite books, and savor the season.
Sunflowers are abundant in September, at grocery stores and farm stands. Use faux sunflowers to decorate your entry, and arrange fresh cut flowers in your home.
Don’t overlook your mailbox, windowboxes, gates, and other outdoor features when decorating for fall. Browse local nurseries and garden centers for ornamental peppers, grasses, and annuals in fall colors.
Early fall is still perfect outdoor dining weather. Use gourds or other natural decor to set a seasonal table. The covered bowls will keep fall soups warm.
Everything Cookies are an all-season favorite, but they’re especially welcome in school lunch boxes. We’ll share the original recipe on the blog soon.
Chipotle burgers are another family favorite and don’t require a recipe. Grill thick slabs of tomato and red onion along with the hamburger. Remove the hamburgers from direct heat and place the cheese on top to melt. Assemble the burgers and drizzle with chipotle mayonnaise. These will be a crowd favorite, so gather friends and enjoy!
September often brings the year’s most delightful weather, making the sea coast an ideal destination. The village of Scituate, just south of Boston, is within easy reach, and has everything you’d expect ~ a quaint harbor, interesting shops, restaurants, and beautiful views.
Boston’s Public Garden makes a lovely picnic spot, with plenty of secluded nooks that give a feeling of privacy. While warm temperatures last, the city offers abundant outdoor spaces to enjoy.
