Make it a Tradition
Apple picking is a favorite tradition in our family. Each September, we take our kids to the local farm so they can scramble over the hillsides, seeking the most heavily laden tree they can find. On that tree, they hunt for the perfect apple.
This looks like a winner!
What to do with the abundance of apples? If you have butter, brown sugar, rolled oats, and cinnamon at home, whip up a crisp. It’s fast, easy, requires few ingredients, and best of all, you don’t really need a recipe.
A No-Recipe Recipe for Apple Crisp
I literally never measure any of my ingredients for the topping of an apple crisp. That way, I can move quickly and get the crisp into the oven. I go by look and the results are always delicious!
You’ll need about:
- 8-10 medium apples, peeled, cored, cut into bite sized chunks (about 1/2 to 1 inch), and placed in a medium baking dish. Sprinkle a couple of teaspoons of sugar over and set aside.
- In a medium bowl, mix together about 1/2 cup each of rolled oats, flour, and brown sugar. Add about a teaspoon of cinnamon, and about 6 tablespoons melted butter. Stir it all up until it holds together loosely. It should not be gluey with too much butter, or so dry that it doesn’t form crumbles.
- Spread mixture over apples and bake at 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown.
So you actually did get a recipe of sorts out of me. If you’ve got a secret twist on apple crisp, let me know!
Enjoy!
