What’s old is new again, and when it comes to dahlias, we couldn’t be happier. This old-fashioned flower is easy to grow and blooms late in the season, just when many flowers are turning up their toes. We’re also sharing two of our favorite mail order nurseries, so you can choose the variety you want and be guaranteed to get high quality tubers.
Dahlias come in nearly every shape and size imaginable, from button varieties to dinner plate-sized stunners. They’ll last quite a long time as cut flowers. Just be sure to refresh the water and recut the stems often.
Tuck dahlia tubers near the center or back of your perennial beds because most are fairly tall. They are excellent in cutting gardens and annual beds as well.
Dahlias are not winter hardy in most areas of the United States, so you will need to lift and store them over the winter. In the spring, pop them back into the ground. They couldn’t be easier!
Some of our favorite dahlia growers are White Flower Farm and Swan Island Dahlias.
We hope you become dahlia growers, along with us!
