Doors that Welcome

Doors that Welcome

~ Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn’t know you left open. ~

Doors that Welcome

What is it about a gorgeous door that is so alluring?  We love the imaginative ways that New Englanders adorn their front entries.  Whatever your budget, there are endless ways to beautify your door and express your personality.

Doors that Welcome

We believe you should always decorate your front door.  A house almost seems naked without some sort of ornament at the main entry, like a small twig wreath, or a simple swag of pussy willow.

As proof that humble is sometimes best, the doors above and below boast the simplest of decorations.

The door above is spectacular for several reasons.  First, its color reminds us of robin’s eggs, the first blue many of us fell in love with as children. Our eyes wander next to the brass letter slot and hardware that suggest permanence and prosperity.  The humble pussy willow swags contrast with the luxurious blue sheen and weight of the door.  Last, and most obvious, the high gloss sets this door apart and gives it a “wow” factor.

This lovely door, set within a tiny courtyard, welcomes visitors and inhabitants home with cheerful flowers. It has a secret garden feeling to it, and when you pass by, it’s easy to miss if you aren’t paying attention.  Pure charm.

The grand door above sets a formal tone. Its impressive fanlight window is entirely original ~ you’re not likely to see another just like it.  Notice the fleur-de-lis door knockers, a symbol that French royals have used for centuries.  We’re not French or royal, but we love fleur-de-lis because it’s beautiful.  If you’re after a formal look, keep plantings and other decor symmetrical.

This door has a wonderful cottage informality, that says, “Come right in, friend.”  The flowers in their pots make lovely accents that can be changed through the season.  They are placed asymmetrically for an informal feel.  Can you imagine the cozy charm just inside these doors?

The informal pottery containers set a casual tone at the formal entry above.  You can easily change the tone of your entry by rearranging your planters.

Gardenia standards flanking a custom hardwood door make a luxurious statement.  But the lobster door knocker keeps the above entry from being too serious.  It’s pure New England!

The nautical entry gate above fits its coastal environment perfectly.  If you have a gate on your property, treat it like a door and decorate it with a wreath, basket, or symbol that makes it uniquely yours.

The crabby knocker on this green door states with whimsey that the home owner has an affinity for the sea.  Why not make a personal statement with door decor?

Your door should bring a smile to your heart and hint at the warmth and happiness within your home.  If it falls short of this, a coat of paint, flowers, and a little originality could be the answer.
