A Child’s Christmas

A Child's Christmas

Christmas holds a unique magic for both young and old, and we confess that we get swept up in its thrall just like we did as children.  Creating joy at Christmas is what parents do, and as moms, we’re often the “elves” who make it all happen.

As everyone knows, Christmas and sweets go hand-in-hand, and we blend the two in traditions that delight our children.

Meet our candy-themed Christmas tree, named for obvious (sweet) reasons.  Of our numerous trees, this is everyone’s favorite.  It’s not unusual to see adults and children alike gently poking among the limbs, exclaiming with delighted gasps.  Gingerbread boys, peppermints, cupcakes, and lollypops abound, with a pretty, ruffled burlap skirt warming its base.

Like many of you, we decorate more than one tree at the holiday.  Sure, we have the big family tree that features heirloom ornaments gathered over the years, but we reserve the other trees for our children’s delight.

I have my mom to thank for the idea of our candy-themed Christmas tree.  Growing up, my mom decorated our tree with real sweets and goodies that we could indulge in.  She made caramel popcorn balls and wrapped them in clear wrap.  My brother, sister, and I strung popcorn while watching Christmas movies.  And the tree was not complete without candy canes adorning the branches.  Our candy-themed tree is reminiscent of my childhood and adds a bit of nostalgia to our holiday decorating.  We’ve gathered our candy ornaments gradually over the years, and we hope our children will one day add to the collection.

This tiny, delightful tree sits atop a small table in our family office.  Evening is the perfect time to admire the sparkling candies, frosted with sugar, in the quiet warmth of this room.
